Welcome Back | A Letter From Universal Orlando’s President, Bill Davis – Discover Universal

By MM Travel and Tours in Travel

Dear Universal Orlando Guests,

When we first made the decision in March 2020 to close Universal Orlando Resort in response to the coronavirus pandemic, we didn’t know how long it would be for. We didn’t know what the future held or what a reopening would entail. However, we did know that whenever we did make the decision to reopen, we’d want to make sure we’re letting our guests enjoy everything they love about our parks in a cautious and thoughtful way.  And we knew that we’d be stronger, more resilient, and even more eager to welcome our guests than ever before.

Today we are excited to invite you to see that for yourself. Today Universal Orlando Resort ends its two-and-a-half month period of closure as we begin a phased reopening to the public.

Getting us here has been an in-depth process, and I am incredibly proud of the ways our Team Members have listened to experts and implemented new operational guidelines for the safety of our guests. At Universal Orlando Resort, we are following what we’re calling the three Ss. That’s screening, meaning we’re taking everybody’s temperature before they enter; sanitization, because we are constantly sanitizing areas and high-touch surfaces in the parks; and spacing, providing markings and reminders throughout our resort so guests can socially distance themselves from other parties.

Things are going to feel a little different, and I encourage everyone to become well-versed in our updated operational guidelines, but know that everyone at Universal Orlando is looking forward to having you back. We’ve got a bit of a service mentality around here — whether we’re serving you food, getting you on a ride, selling you a T-Shirt — serving our guests is what we do and our Team Members are grateful for the opportunity to go the extra mile on your behalf.

Personally, I’ve missed the parks, too. Since I started at Universal Orlando in 2006, I have taken a weekly walk around the parks on Saturday mornings. This is how I stay in touch with our product, stay in touch with our Team Members, and get to know guests like you. Seeing people in our parks enjoying themselves and making memories with their families is energizing and invaluable to me. These past few months I’ve still gone for that weekly walk a couple times, and I can tell you with confidence that the parks just aren’t the same without you.

BillWalking

If you are ready and set to come back, to let loose in our parks and enjoy all our destination has to offer, we are more than ready to welcome you. If you are hesitant for any reason to come back now, we will be just as thrilled to welcome you through the arches when you’re ready as we are today.

On June 7, Universal will be celebrating its 30th anniversary here in central Florida.

We’ll be here. We hope you will be here soon, too.

Sincerely,
Bill Davis

Universal Orlando Team Member Shares His Story of Transformation and Tips for Running Universal

By MM Travel and Tours in Travel

When I first emailed Bob Page, one of the broadcast engineers working at Universal Orlando Resort’s Radio Broadcast Center, about the possibility of talking to him about the upcoming Running Universal’s Epic Character 5K and 10K races, he responded with:

Of course…. I’d be happy to do whatever… pretty excited that two of my favorite worlds are colliding!!!

You wouldn’t guess it by looking at the Bob of today, but growing up in Connecticut, he was your standard gets-picked-last-in-sports kid.

He had always had an interest in doing radio some day, but it felt like a pipe dream. When he moved to Florida in 1991, Bob applied for a job at another theme park and was told there weren’t any costumes that would fit him.

“I was well over 300 pounds at the time,” Bob explains. “And so that hurt, it stung. I drove up the street and applied here and was hired in security. It was 1991, so the broadcast center at that point didn’t even exist, it was just a facade.”

By ‘94, the Radio Broadcast Center had been established and Bob had landed a weekend gig that eventually led to his current role overseeing the 400 or so different radio shows produced from our two in-park studios.

“One of my favorite things about working here happens at the end of every day,” Bob says. “The broadcast center sits in the theme park, so when I head home after work, I get to walk through the park. I see families completely enjoying themselves and smiling together. This is a place that brings people together and I get to be a part of that.”

The people closest to Bob would tell you that, for a majority of his life, he was more likely to be found on a couch than a running trail (and he definitely wasn’t the sneaker enthusiast that he is today). In many ways, Bob found himself using food as a salve to his problems. Bad days were remedied with a binge, vacations were planned around food, and Bob’s activity level was extremely low.

“I didn’t ever do anything,” Bob says. “I was just tired all the time.”

It wasn’t until a doctor’s appointment right before his fiftieth birthday that Bob received the news that would change his life.

Weighing in at 320 pounds at the time, Bob heard his doctor say it point-blank: “If you don’t change your ways, you will die young.”

“That struck a pretty good chord,” Bob says. “I felt like I had a very good life — a happy family, two daughters, three grandkids —and I just felt like I was in a good and happy place and I didn’t want any of it to end early.”

For Bob, this moment in the doctor’s office was an absolute epiphany moment. He knew it was time to make a change and he had a feeling he knew how he was going to make it.

“It was anything but as simple as it sounds, but it literally came down to eating less and moving more,” Bob explains.

At the time, Bob’s family had a trip planned to Ireland and he knew he’d have two options on that trip: walk a lot and experience all the sights with his family, or take his usual route and sit out on activities. Prior to the trip, Bob committed to walk a mile every day, which helped dramatically prepare him for the family’s time in Ireland. Returning home, Bob had lost some weight already and realized he was not only capable of change, but if he really committed he could make a drastic one in his life.

“I decided I would walk a 5K every day,” he says. “It took me about six months to run my first one all the way through, and then once I ran it the first time I was like, ‘well, if you can run it once you can do that every single time. You don’t walk anymore; now you run.’”

For 580 consecutive days, Bob ran a 5K. He never missed a day. He lost 150 pounds.

blank

That first streak caused an entire momentum-shift in his life. He started posting his fitness story on social media in an effort to motivate others and he still runs 5-6 days a week.

Bob says that while it was never easy, he always felt committed.

“You have to commit to the end result,” he says. “This is not something you can do for six months, lose some weight, and then everything is going to be fine. It really does have to be a life change.”

Running Universal - Bob Page

With Running Universal in just a few weeks, Bob is looking forward to the event that he describes as “two of my favorite things clashing together.”

His advice for beginners?

“Make sure you have good shoes and remember any movement is good movement. You have to start somewhere, so if you want to come out and walk and enjoy the characters and the event — do that. It’s impressive and amazing to take that step.”

And as for you avid runners, Bob — who got a sneak-peak at the medals — wants you to know they’ll look great with your collection.

blank

“For runners, medals are very important and these look so, so cool.”

In some ways, Bob wishes to some degree that he had prioritized his health sooner, but he aims to live his life without regret and to just keep up with what he started with that first of 580+ 5Ks.

“Changing used to feel insurmountable,” he says. “I was one of those people who didn’t fit on any of our rides and now I’m making plans to run the theme park. Running has helped me tremendously physically, but also mentally. Running is my therapy.”

Universal Orlando Close Up | Killer Klowns From Outer Space Coming to Halloween Horror Nights

By MM Travel and Tours in Travel

MGM Pictures’ Killer Klowns From Outer Space Has Landed at Halloween Horror Nights

Laugh now, die later.

Send in the klowns! The Killer Klowns are returning to Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights in an all-new side-splitting haunted house. The crazed klowns are back to wreak havoc and remind you why you were afraid of clowns in the first place.

STORY

Go beyond the mayhem and madness of last year’s wildly popular scare zone and step right up for an entire haunted house experience based on the cult classic film, Killer Klowns from Outer Space. This new experience will feature a gaggle of new characters including the baby Klowns, Boco, and Klownzilla, as well as new scenery like the Klowns’ circus-tent spaceship, and the cotton candy cocoon storage room where they keep their victims.

Throughout the house your sense of fear will be triggered by your sense of smell as you encounter strong whiffs of familiar fairground fare like sweet cotton candy, stale buttery popcorn and ice cream. Don’t be fooled though, these otherwise pleasant aromas are a sign of the murderous gang of klowns that awaits you as you move from scene to scene.

Try to evade them or you’re likely to end up captured in one of their cotton candy cocoons and doomed to a terrible fate. There will be no escaping the big teeth of the Big Top.

EVENT DETAILS

Halloween Horror Nights returns to Universal Studios Florida on select nights from Sept. 6 – Nov. 2. This year, you’ll experience 10 haunted houses, 5 scare zones, live entertainment and more. Choose a night and get your tickets, vacation package and event extras now!

Universal Orlando Close Up | Ghostbusters is Coming to Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights

By MM Travel and Tours in Travel

For the first time ever, Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters is coming to Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights in a new haunted house.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, you’ll jump through the movie screen of the original 1984 film and walk through some of your favorite scenes like the Temple of Gozer and more.

In this haunted house, you’ll be transported to the streets of New York as the rift between worlds opens, releasing ghoulish spirits, hideous specters and ectoplasm-dripping phantasms in every shape and size. Come face-to-face with the voracious Slimer, the all-power Gozer the Gozerian, Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man and more.

Peter, Ray, Egon and Winston will have to save the day as these paranormal creatures materialize in unexpected places – but will their proton packs be enough?

This year from Sept. 6 – Nov. 2, Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights brings together stories and visions from the world’s most notorious creators of fear, from cinematic greats and crazed current cult favorites to the park’s original abominations. You’re never quite sure if your spine is tingling with dread or sheer excitement.

Universal Orlando takes fear to the max. From Sept. 6 – Nov. 2, the 80s return with a vengeance with 10 totally terrifying haunted houses, 5 pulse-pounding scare zones and outrageous live entertainment. From cinematic screams to the most horrifying cult classics, there’s no escape from the decade that just won’t die.

And in case you missed it, check out our previous Halloween Horror Nights announcements for this year:
