A Review of the Honolulu Powerpass and the Honolulu MealTicket Pass
Buying an Honolulu Pass is without a doubt a great way to save money during your vacation in Hawaii. Many travelers just don’t know that this pass exist until they see other people using it at popular attractions, skipping the line and keeping good money in their pockets.
But there are some restrictions you need to be aware of before buying. Read on.
First, you need to know that there is not only one Honolulu Pass but two: The Honolulu Powerpass and the Honolulu MealTicket Pass. Each Pass offers specific benefits but both focus on local Oahu attractions and restaurants.
That means they are not applicable in Maui. Nevertheless, if you plan to visit Oahu on your way to Maui, like most travelers do, these passes could be just what you are looking for. They are particularly interesting if you are traveling with kids.
Here’s a closer look at the benefits provided by each Honolulu pass to help you pick the right one. I wouldn’t be surprised that you end up buying both passes since they complement each other so well.
The Honolulu Powerpass is one great money-saving solution focused on popular Oahu attractions.
What are the benefits? The Honolulu Powerpass includes admission to the top Oahu attractions, tours, sights and museums. The pass offers built-in savings on the included admissions fees and grants quick access to many attractions.
Simply present your Power Pass and enter. No need to wait and pay. For more versatility, you can choose pass’s duration, up to 5 consecutive days.
This is definitively a good way to save money on Honolulu-Waikiki popular attractions like Pearl Harbor, Arizona Memorial, Honolulu City Bus Tour Hanauma Bay, Sea Life Park, Diamond Head and a lot more.
How does it work? For one low price, you receive breakfast, lunch, and dinner at any of a number of popular Honolulu, Hawaii, restaurants. Simply bring your MealTicket Pass at a participating restaurant and choose from the available menu options. No need for reservations. It’s awesome when traveling with kids.
The card is designed to accommodate travelers who don’t want to worry about reservations or cannot commit to fixed schedules. Let’s say you spent the whole day visiting attractions with the whole family (using your Honolulu Powerpass) and, suddenly, everybody’s hungry. All you have to do is head to the closest participating restaurant and enjoy a meal using you Honolulu MealTicket Pass.
Nothing too fancy, but no complications. If you fit in this scenario, you should seriously consider buying both passes.
Make sure to visit the Honolulu Pass official website to find participating restaurants, see if the pass is right for you and make a final decision. Again, it all depends on your specific needs. Most families usually just love it while couples on a romantic vacation may prefer to pass.
Look no further. The ultimate Maui guidebook does exist and it’s called Maui Revealed.
I found this great travel guide by Andrew Doughty not so long ago when I was planning my first trip to Maui, Hawaii. You probably heard about it. The famous travel guide has sold millions of copies around the world.
I know it sounds too good to be true, but please, read on. This one is an exception.
My Very Best Move: Buying the Maui Revealed Guidebook
I had the chance to visit many countries in the world and that means I have used a LOT of guidebooks. My shelves are full of them. I just can’t find the courage to throw them away, even if I know many are totally outdated. I feel emotionally bound to them…
Anyways… The fact is that I am very picky when it comes to buying a guidebook. I know what I am looking for and I am usually unsatisfied by most of my findings.
One travel guide may provide great information but no maps. Another is full of amazing pictures but no valuable information. And so on.
I usually end up buying 3 to 4 different book to make sure everything is covered.
When I started planning my first trip to the Hawaiian islands, I stumbled upon the Ultimate Guidebook Series (Oahu-Maui-Kauai-Big Island) by accident, while browsing the Internet.
The reviews were so positive, I couldn’t believe it. I was curious but still in doubts. I already had bought two different Maui guidebooks, but I finally decided to give it a try.
I received the book a couple of days later. My first reaction was to say to my girlfriend: “what a weird blue cover!”… Then I started reading it and I quickly understood why millions of Maui lovers were fans of the ‘Revealed’ series.
A Very Special Guidebook
This is no ordinary Maui guidebook. Andrew Doughty as a unique way of presenting the Hawaiian islands. He is straightforward and I love his honesty. All of the content is presented without any advertisement or sponsorship. Only Andrew’s opinion, good or bad, clear and simple, the way it should be.
You can really feel his passion for Maui. And this is true for all the Hawaiian islands. He hiked every single trail and experienced every activity mentioned in his guidebook. He also took the majority of the stunning pictures found in the 300+ pages.
The man knows what he is talking about and lead you to very unique spots only locals know about.. Those special spots have become a little more known now that the guidebook has been read by millions.
But don’t worry. I have visited most of them using the Maui Revealed Guidebook, and the magic is still there. Most of those places are out of the main tourist path. You usually need a little extra walk. And this is enough to keep the crowds away.
Some suggestions found in the travel guide will bring you very close to traditional land while some other will allow you to discover unspoiled natural treasures. Please be respectful of traditions and nature. Maui is a generous island, sharing its beauty for us to enjoy, most of the time totally free. Let’s make sure we keep this beauty intact for those who will come after us. I believe this is the least we can do.
Two Awesome Features
The Maui Revealed Guidebook provides a lot of features, but 2 of them are particularly useful. Those features alone are enough reasons for you to buy the book.
The first feature is what Andrew calls the ‘Real Gems’.
This is a simple feature, but a very handy one. When Andrew says this place, this activity or this hotel is ‘A Real Gem’, he means that it’s an absolute must-see. Don’t miss it.
Tip – If you can’t spend much time in a specific area of the island, simply look for the gem icon in the Maui Revealed guidebook pages and make sure to keep some time to, at least, visit this spot.
The second useful feature is the maps themselves. It may sound crazy, but the Maui Revealed maps are just incredibly well-thought. For the geographer in me, this is pure joy.
Andrew applies the old yet powerful less is better concept perfectly. He removed from the maps everything that is not useful to you, the traveler. Then he added everything you wish you would find on a traveling map.
If a bunch of streets in a residential area are not useful to the traveler, you won’t find them on the map. But if a small trail leading to a pristine beach is crucial to find your way to the secluded spot, then it will appear very clearly on the map. The same will apply to a series of telephone posts, a unique mailbox, a weird tree or the very handy old miles markers along the road…
Anything that you would use to help a friend find his way to a specific destination, Andrew will use and show on the map. This is very smart and so helpful for us, travelers. You end up finding your way to the ‘real gems’ very easily. It just feels natural.
That’s how I found myself looking for this very unique rock that would tell me it’s time to turn right until I reach this little suspended bridge surrounded by a bunch of bamboo trees. You get the picture… I felt like a treasure hunter. And that felt good. Because what I found, following Andrew’s advice, were actually some of the most amazing Maui’s natural treasures. Real gems as he would say!
The Maui Revealed Guidebook: Worth it?
Trust me, it’s totally worth it! I hope by now you get a better feel of what this special Maui guidebook is all about. Please, do yourself a favor, and buy a copy of this travel guide. You won’t regret it. I guarantee you will be carrying the guidebook with you during your entire stay on the island. It’s that useful.
Where can you buy the travel guide?
You can find Maui Revealed almost everywhere. The easiest way to get the guidebook is to click on the book cover below. This will take you directly to Amazon.com. The buying process is simple and secure. It takes a couple of clicks for the order to be confirmed and the book will be delivered to your door in a few days (depending on your location and the shipping package you choose).
Great news! Maui Revealed is now available as a mobile application on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Click on the AppStore icon to see more details and start your download.
In case you plan on visiting more than one Hawaiian island, I added links to the entire ‘family’ of Revealed guidebooks. These travel guides are all as good as Maui Revealed is. I own them all and I am glad I do. So don’t hesitate to buy a copy of those titles as well to fully enjoy your trip to Oahu, Kauai or Big Island.
Use Online Travel Aggregators to Find the Best Maui Airfare in No Time
Don’t have much time to spend on your search for cheap flights to Hawaii Maui?
Online travel aggregators could be the solution. The word aggregators may be intimidating but don’t worry, these meta search engines don’t bite. All they do, is try to help you save time (and some boring typing) while you search for the best airfares.
The process is simple. As usual, you must fill-in a quick form with your destination, dates, etc. But this time, you only need to do it once. The travel aggregators take care of the rest, retrieving results from dozens of travel agencies like Hotwire, Expedia, Priceline, etc.
You job is made easier. All the available cheap flights to Hawaii are now visible to you. Too good to be true? Yes and No. Aggregators are without a doubt useful tools. But the comparison process is still only halfway done. What you get, is a bunch of separate windows. You still have to go from one window to another trying to find the best deal.
That being said, you do save some time and repetitive typing, which is great. Give it a try and see for yourself if you like playing with alligato… oops!…aggregators. See my favorites below.
In any case, I strongly suggest that you don’t stop your search here. Make sure to give a try to other booking options to maximize your chances of finding the cheap airfare to Maui Hawaii your are looking for.
Here are my favorite travel aggregators. Take time to read the What I Like About It comment that I wrote as a quick review. Then start your search by clicking on the aggregator logo or simply use the quick online booking tools for an even quicker access to airfares.
What I Like About It: Does-it-all aggregator: Maui flights, hotels, vacation packages, cars, cruises and even vacation rentals. Endless list of sites to compare.
Let you choose the sites you want to include in the search. Fare Drops Alert available. Use of handy Tabs to compare prices makes it possible to avoid annoying pop-up windows found in many other aggregators. Rich Top Travel Deals section.
What I Like About It: Easy-to-use 3-step search and compare process. 100+ sites included in the search. Save time not having to open each site manually and enter the same flight details. Cons: Must select sites one by one (no pre-selection). Annoying pop-up windows generated by the search.
You can book directly from the TripMama website or stay on this page and use the TripMama Online Booking Tool provided below.
What I Like About It: Provides deals by destination. Fast searches. Cons: compare prices from 12 agencies only, but the big ones are included (Hotwire, Expedia, Priceline, etc.). Annoying pop-up windows generated by the search.
What I Like About It: Trip Advisor is not an online travel agency like Hotwire, Expedia, Priceline, etc. It is first and foremost a site dedicated to travelers reviews.
If you are looking for feedback on an airline, hotel or activity, this is a great place to start your search. Everything can be sorted by traveler’s and editor’s rating letting you know what other Maui Hawaii lovers think of each service provider. Very useful filters are available to help you refine your search and find the best Maui airfare.
What I Like About It: Year after year, Hawaiian Airlines is voted one of the best US airline based on consumers satisfaction and travelers reviews. This is definitely the airline you should choose for your Hawaii inter-island flights.
You might not know it, but Hawaiian Airlines also provides flights from mainland to the Hawaiian islands. They offer good rates with Aloha spirit in bonus. Book your ticket from the Hawaiian Airlines website now or visit this page to know more about it.

Not All Maui Hawaii Travel Guides Are Created Equal
When comes the time to choose the right Maui guidebook to buy, it’s easy to get confused. There’s a lot of guidebooks on the market and each of them propose tons of features.
Here are some advice to help you sort them out and choose the guidebook that is right for you.
1- All Hawaii or Maui Only?
Are you going to visit only Maui or several Hawaiian islands?
This simple question is a very important one. If your answer is Maui only, then you should definitively look for a guidebook that is focusing exclusively on Maui. The reason for that is simple: you will get a lot more valuable information for your money.
It’s not that the general Hawaii guidebooks are bad. It’s just that those all-Hawaii travel guides need to find a way to squeeze in a single guidebook tons of information covering the 4 main islands (Oahu, Big Island, Maui and Kauai).
Even if some publishers do propose quality all-Hawaii guidebooks, they simply can’t provide as many deep and diversified suggestions compared to what specific Maui guidebooks can offer.
My recommendation: Buy a specific guidebook for each island you plan to visit.
Tip – If you really don’t have the money to buy 3 or 4 different guidebooks, buy a general Hawaii guidebook and consider buying a specific guidebook related to your main destination. This is probably your best move to cover wide and deep at once. This is what I did the the first time I visited the Hawaiian islands.
Here’s a good all-around Hawaii guidebook to start with.
I can’t stress this enough: your Maui guidebook must provide detailed, accurate and up-to-date maps.
As a tourist, discovering the island for the first time, you are constantly relying on maps to get around and find the ‘perfect spot’ you are dreaming of. There is nothing more frustrating than being mislead by an inaccurate map.
That doesn’t mean that you need maps that are so precise and complete that you could locate every mailbox in front of every houses in every small town of the islandÉ Too much information can easily prevent you from being able to use the maps efficiently.
What you need is just enough of the right information to help you find your way. Things like a big old tree or a giant rock along the road are often a lot more useful than a road sign hidden among all others looking just alike. This is what you, as a tourist, want to find on a map in terms of relevant information.
In my opinion, the very best application of this philosophy has been done by Andrew Doughty in his best-seller Maui Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook. Make sure to read my review of this awesome travel guide here. This Maui guidebook is in a class of its own.
As a final piece of advice on maps, make sure the entire island is covered. Some guidebooks only focus on popular towns and the most visited areas. Also, look for durable maps, with paper coating resistant to water and frequent folding. You will use your guidebook a lot and you want it to last.
Tip – Remember that your ultimate goal should be to avoid the need to buy a dedicated map. Replacing a dedicated map is a big challenge for a guidebook, but I know by experience that it is possible since the Maui Revealed Guidebook already achieved it.
3- Editorial Picks and Ratings
There is such a thing as too much choice. I experience it every time I read a new guidebook. I am so excited to discover a new place, that everything I read seems interesting. In my eyes, every single attraction is a must-see (please, be frank and tell me I am not the only crazy never-see-enough travel lover out there!).
Sadly, we all know time is a rare resource. You just can’t do and see everything in one trip. And honestly, it should not be your objectiveÉ especially in Hawaii. You should rather try to set yourself on the Hawaiian time, meaning taking time to enjoy everything you do, like exploring the island. After all, allowing you to get away from mainland’s frenziness is one of the islands main benefit.
This is where the Editorial Pick or Rating System comes handy. This feature helps you choose the best of the best.
The majority of today’s guidebooks do propose a rating system generally based on stars (5 stars being the best). This is a good start.
But some Maui travel guides push one step further. Those are the guidebooks you are looking for. They provide straightforward opinions to help you choose the very best thing to do, to see or to taste in a specific area. They are not afraid to criticize and to take position. This kind of information is invaluable for the travelers (like me) who have a very hard time making a final choice.
In some Maui guidebooks these picks are identified by an easy-to-identify icon (ex.: A Real Gem in Maui Revealed). In others, like Fodor’s Hawaii, publishers prefer to use a Top 5 or Top 10 system to identify the absolute must-sees, must-dos and so on.
As long as the Maui guidebook of your choice provides some kind of editorial pick, you are good to go. I do prefer though when a consistent set of icons is used throughout the entire book. Makes everything so much easier.
What Interisland Carrier Should I Choose to Fly to Maui?
Hawaiian Airline is the largest Hawaii-based airline. If you are planning to visit Maui or another Hawaii island, chances are you will fly with this Airline.
The carrier is in business since 1929 and was once called Inter-Island Airways Ltd.
It currently serves 19 destinations through its Honolulu hub.
Almost half of the seats offered at the Honolulu Airport come from Hawaiian.
Hawaiian Airlines, also called HAL (OACI code), provides a daily service between 5 destinations on the four Hawaiian Islands (Hilo, Honolulu, Kahului, Kailua-Kona, Lihue).
A fleet of Boeing 717-200 jets, with a seating capacity of 123 passengers, is in used to assure these interisland flights.
Does That Mean I should Book with HAL?
Sincerely, in my opinion, it doesn’t matter that much which inter island carrier you choose.
This is a pretty short and inexpensive flight.
That being said, I choose Hawaiian every time I had to connect from Oahu to Maui, Kauai or Big Island. And every time, I was pleased with the results.
Then again, it’s only a short 30 minutes or so in the air. Not much to criticize.
But my tickets were not overbooked, the plane left on time and the crew served me the traditional cup of ‘fruit nectar’ with a beautiful Hawaiian smile.
A sure bet.
It has even been rated the nation’s top-ranked carrier for service quality in 2008 as reported by the 19th annual national Airline Quality Rating (AQR).
I guess the cup of fruit nectar makes all the difference… or it might be the smiles! You decide!
Seriously, if I were you, I would be checking Hawaiian Air first if the rates they proposed are good the day you plan your inter island flight. If you are fine with the rates, then book directly on HAL’s website. If you are not sure, there are other options. Read on.
Is HAL the Only Hawaii Interisland Carrier?
If you want another option, you can have a look at Go! and Mokulele Airlines. In fact the two airlines are now working together under the Go!Mokulele Airlines banner.
If you prefer to book your inter island ticket and your continental flight in one single transaction, then I would suggest you visit my cheap airfare to Maui page and use one of the online solution I recommend. It’s easy and efficient. For more flight tickets discounts, go to the Maui Deals page.
Would You Give Hawaiian Airline 5-Star Rating? Share YOUR Experience Here
Hawaiian Airlines has been rated the nation’s top-ranked carrier for service quality in 2008 as reported by the 19th annual national Airline Quality Rating (AQR).
