Sometimes you don’t have to step out of your home country to visit foreign cities like these five cities in the U.S. that share a name with India.

“What’s in a name? That Which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet” – Quote from Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, CA. 1600

If only William Shakespeare knew what he wrote in this play will be used till the end of time to define people, place and things by one thing, and one thing only- Name. Everyone carries a name, and this name is not something that we choose for ourselves. We didn’t choose our name or the name of the cities we live in because they existed and will be there till eternity and beyond. Our name defines us as an individual and helps others recognize us or call us out amongst people. It’s our identity, and it’s specific to us, but our names are replicated, not duplicated.

We can have the same names, but we would differ on a lot of aspects. It includes our culture, history, location, food, and various other things. A man in Texas would love Stone Cold Steve Austin, but maybe another Texan may not be of the same view. It’s just the same with our names and city names as well. Now, think about it, and gauge for a moment that what if we told you that there are five (actually more) places that share the same name as Indian Cities distant 13,568 kilometers or 8431 miles. Don’t believe us, let’s help you find out these places, and have fun!

Delhi, India and Delhi, United States

If you are an Indian and have watched the famous Ramesh-Suresh series, then you know about identical twins with rhyming names. They are not from a 70’s classical Bollywood movie where two kids get separated at an intersection due to circumstances only to reunite after two and a half hours despite similar traits through the running minutes.

Delhi in India is the Capital city of the country and also a Union Territory. The US one is a town in Delaware County, New York, United States. It doesn’t have the Mughal monuments like the Indian side of things but was once known as the ‘heart of the Ontario tobacco belt.’

Lucknow, India and Lucknow, Pennsylvania

The city of aadabs, nawabs, and kebabs is home to some culinary and historical importance. The place has various places to visit, and the lip-smacking food on the streets and shops of Lucknow brings you in awe of the city. The Chikankaari style of embroidery makes the dresses fascinating, and you feel great donning the dresses.

Lucknow in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States, is a small unincorporated community. It derives its name from the capital city of the state of Uttar Pradesh and is in the Harrisburg-Carlisle area. If you thought there is just one place names Lucknow in the USA, you are highly mistaken. There is Lucknow in Hampshire, West Virginia, Minnesota and South Carolina as well.

Salem, Tamil Nadu and Salem, United States

Talk about another coinciding name in India and United States, and Salem comes to light. No, don’t worry, this is not something out of Manmohan Desai Ji’s movie, which had stories on the lost and found plot. Salem in Tamil Nadu has its name mentioned in the 1st and 2nd-century inscriptions.

Salem in the United States of America has a different implication. It is a Hebrew word for Peace. Doesn’t it all look so tranquil right now, and indeed Salem does have a special place in the people’s heart of the two nations.

Calcutta, West Bengal and Calcutta, United States

Talk about similar names but no other similarities, and this should be on the list. Calcutta is a reputed name in Indian history, whether it be before or after Independence. It is famous for its literary work, tasty sweets, and food. While these aren’t the only reasons for its popularity, a trip to the city will help you understand and explore the city in a better manner.

Calcutta in Columbiana County, Ohio, was first named West Union in 1810. It was called Foulkstown due to William Foulks as he built the first brick house at the location. It went through various name changes, including ‘Nineveh’ before getting its current name Calcutta. The place saw growth after the 1980s and is on a growth journey.

Baroda, Gujrat and Baroda, United States

Baroda in Gujrat is a lovely place, as is the one in the States. Baroda in India serves some mouth-watering dishes like Dhokla, Fafda, Khakhra, Thepla, Handvo, among others. Gujarat is also the birth state of the current Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi Ji.

The United States of America has a village named Baroda in the Berrien County of Michigan. People believe that Michael Houser founded the place as he platted it, and the beautiful Baroda in the States came to life in 1907. It does confirm that one man’s vision can change the world.
